Fair Weather Friends

Tags: Music, Reviews

Daedelus, one of my favorite experimental musicians, has released more stunning and surprising music for those of us who can't get enough of him, and those who haven't found him yet. The Fair Weather Friends - EP has five new tunes to blow your mind and make your feet tap-tap.

This one has a track that I will boldly claim (and then take back in a few weeks when I change my mind) is my favorite Daedelus track: El Subidon. It's a sublime, hypnotic, euphoric piece that is wearing out my speakers. Where do you get a volume knob that goes to eleven?

Daedelus claims to have three new LPs in the works, and if this EP is any indication of what he's up to these days, then colour me excited!

Here's a video for the title track from the EP:

"Fair Weather Friends" by Daedelus

Be sure to look for the video for "Sundown" on YouTube too. Good stuff.

A Little Oblivion Machinima

Tags: Elder Scrolls, Games, Machinima, Music

After discovering Red vs. Blue years ago, I've been a fan of machinima. For those who haven't yet discovered this art form, it's where videos are created using footage from video games. Often, a new soundtrack is added to the video to tell a new story or re-interpret the game somehow. New dialog, new music, whatever. It's the visual version of what DJ's have been doing for decades: remixing existing work to create something new.

I just discovered some amazing musical machinima based on Oblivion by Stuart Maxwell. He remixes both the audio and video from the game to create hip-hop in "Not Bad Work For Some Folks", a bad dream in "Drugs", and funny drum'n'bass (vsnare?) in this one:

I don't think he knows me...

Reynald Jemane is my favorite Oblivion NPC, so I was sold in the first two seconds!

My personal favorite by Maxwell is "Drugs", but it's a bit heavy and surreal for most folks, I'm sure. But if you like surreal stuff, definitely check it out. It's a beautifully directed dystopian nightmare.

For some World of Warcraft machinima, check out Burning Twilight.

Planet Earth Spreads Like Fire

Tags: Music

Prince released his new album Planet Earth yesterday free in a UK paper, and as a result (intentionally?), it's everywhere on the internet right now. Look for it at the peer-to-peer service of your choice. You'll find that the UK isn't the only place getting it for free.

Prince's record companies are furious about his decision to release the album like this, but it only proves how they have completely lost touch with their own industry. Planet Earth has been available for weeks already on the internet. What damage did Prince cause by releasing it free yesterday? None. Now some people in the UK have a round shiny disc with the music on it, whereas others only have it on their hard drives. If anyone wanted it for free, they would already have it.

I'll be buying this puppy on vinyl if I can find it, so I feel no guilt by downloading it ahead of time. Just listen to track 8, "Chelsea Rodgers", and you'll be looking for a way to give Prince your money!

He probably has that power. I've always admired his superhero-like costumes, so it wouldn't surprise me if he had superpowers to match.
